Protection
Needle felted wool and stitched thread on pressed felt, stuffed
85x55x12 cm (2024)
This is part of a series of wearable sculptures I started making in 2024. The way it drapes across the shoulders and down the front can be seen as to either protect the body, as armour, or hang as burdens around the neck. On one shape there is a large eye, a symbol of protection perhaps. On the other, larger shape, there is a multitude of small wool heads, all facing the person wearing the piece. This cluster of tiny heads resemble soft nodules or teats from a distance. When making it I was thinking about burdens and armour. How as disabled artists we carry our struggles, and also our stories. Stories about ourselves and who we are, once were, or want to be. And I was thinking a lot of how the body can keep the score. Our traumas sit in our bodies, and not just as stories.
