It could be worse

Soft sculpture - yarn stitched on reclaimed fabric, then stuffed in the shape of a large pillow

approx 93x68x15cm, when laid flat (2023)

The phrase, It could be worse, is repeatedly stitched in two rows, like a mantra or invocation, on reclaimed fabric. By using pale pink yarn on pale pink fabric, the stitched text is hard to read from a distance, making it like a whisper. It’s a somewhat loaded phrase, spoken by others to console us in times of pain and hard ship, and often used in self-talk, when trying to comfort ourselves. It could be worse. I’m hoping the squishy soft sculpture is more comforting than the phrase stitched on it.
